Cyclist To Face Deportation After Hit By Truck

A cyclist to face deportation, after he was hit by the pickup truck at a crosswalk in Florida and has been turned over to the immigration officials, said the authorities on Thursday.

31-year-old Marcos Huete, from the Honduras, has darted out in front of the truck in the Key West and also was fined $75 for hindering the traffic, according to the crash report by Florida Highway Patrol. The driver of the truck was not fined.

The civil rights advocates have strongly condemned the police response as a officer can be heard on the bodycam video asking whether the man is illegal before providing him the required medical assistance as he was laying on the sidewalk beside to his bicycle. After few moments, a second Spanish-speaking officer has called for an ambulance.

Olga Huete, the man's sister, said that the officers told them to return to the place of the crash, where her brother was cited and was turned over to the Border Patrol. The Florida Highway Patrol did not respond to the requests for a comment on how they will cooperate with the immigration officials in cases of traffic.

Olga Huete also raised a question that why did her brother received the fine when he was riding through a crosswalk without a traffic sign or light.

A Miami lawyer Yale Galanter said that the officer was within the boundaries of his rights to issue a citation but he pointed out "it's very rare that a pedestrian who has been hit by a pickup truck would be the one cited for causing his own injuries."

Marcos works two jobs in the construction during day and also as a restaurant dishwasher at the night, his sister said. Huete has two daughters in his native Choluteca, Honduras. An immigration attorney was hired by his sisters to see whether they could halt his deportation. At present, Marcos is in a Miami detention center.
