Florida Lawmakers Consider Communications Tax Cuts February 28, 2017 23:50

Some lawmakers consider it is the kind of direct relief largely absent from the Gov. Rick Scott's call for $618 million in tax cuts, which primarily benefit the corporations. Under SB 378, filed on Friday by Sen. Anitere Flores (R-Miami), the Florida's communications services tax would be reduced by 2 percent. The tax was cut by 1.73 percent in the year 2015 but currently remains among the nation's highest. "This tax relief package continues our commitment to reducing the tax burden facing Florida families and businesses," Flores said in a statement. "Reducing taxes leads to private sector job creation and a flourishing economy that benefits all Floridians." The impact of the proposed tax cut would be modest, saving an average Floridian between $20 to $30 per a year. But, unlike most of the tax cuts in the governor's package, it would be broad-based and benefiting anyone with a cell phone, a cable bill or both. The Florida State University freshman Judy Shin said that, the legislation "(It's) not a big difference, but a difference. I mean, like, a dollar is a dollar!" Kansas City held peace march for deceased Indian techie At the legislative hearings on Scott's tax cuts, some of his fellow Republicans have questioned that why the corporate income tax and a sales tax on the commercial leases would be in the line for reductions, but not the increasing property tax burden felt by the most homeowners. The critics said that, while a back-to-school sales tax holiday could help the families to save money on books and clothing, and other opportunities to provide direct middle class tax relief are insufficient or altogether absent. After the years of championing billions of dollars worth of business-focused tax cuts he predicted would result in the large-scale economic reinvestment and higher state revenues, Scott is grappling with a difficult reality. The state economists are now reporting that the revenues have plummeted so precipitously a budget deficit of $750 million or even more is on the immediate horizon. For now, Scott is sticking to his talking points. "They buy more equipment, put more money into research, marketing," he said of the anticipated supply side effects of tax cuts. "That ultimately adds up to more jobs." But unlike the Scott's tax cut proposal, cutting the communications services tax would be fully funded by eliminating the insurance industry tax break. That, combined with the favorable optics of reducing the tax borne by millions of Floridians, could make for an easier sell in the Tallahassee. Florida’s Communications Services Tax, according to the Florida Dept. of Revenue, the CST is imposed on a wide variety of community services. On local, and long distance phone service: the Florida tax rate of 7.44 percent. On mobile communications and video services (which also includes cable TV): the Florida tax rate of 7.44 percent. On direct-to-home satellite service: Florida tax rate is 11.44 percent There is also the local communications tax whose tax varies. Mrudula Duddempudi.

French Historian Threatened With Deportation February 27, 2017 18:36

The prominent French historian has said that he was detained for more than 10 hours in the Houston and threatened with deportation, in the latest of several examples of high-profile individuals being questioned extensively at the US airports before being allowed entry. Henry Rousso flew from Paris to the Houston on last Wednesday to take part in the symposium at Texas A&M University but was wrongly detained and almost sent back to the France after a border guard failed to understand Rousso’s entitlements under the visa rules, the university officials said. While he was held by the officials, Rousso contacted the university officials who attempted to secure his release. Rousso was waiting for customs officials to send him back to Paris as an illegal alien on the first flight out, Richard Golsan, a professor at the Texas A&M, told the Eagle. Following scorn poured on the Donald Trump by the French president and the mayor of Paris after the US president suggested in a speech last week that Paris is unsafe for the American tourists, this incident has sparked fresh outrage in the France. A presidential candidate,Emmanuel Macron, tweeted on Sunday to declare that “there is no excuse for what happened to Henry Rousso. Our country is open to scientists and intellectuals.” Fatma Marouf, the director of A&M Immigrant Rights Clinic, told the Guardian on Sunday that she found out about the Rousso’s situation at about 10pm on Wednesday night and worked to get him freed, which happened three or four hours later. She said that Rousso came to the US on the visitor’s visa which normally does not allow the recipients to work or receive compensation, but there are exceptions for some academic activities, such as giving the lectures or speeches. After landing in the Houston he was taken to an interview room where an officer suspected him of travelling on the another, expired, visa, which he wrote in the Huffington Post’s French edition. He credited the intervention of the university officials with securing his release and said that he did not know why he was singled out for the special scrutiny, but doubted it was by chance. Before Writing Reports Cops To View Body Camera Footage Last week it was reported that border agents in the Florida detained the US citizen son of the boxer Muhammad Ali and asked if he was a Muslim, while the celebrated Australian children’s author Mem Fox said that she “collapsed and sobbed like a baby” after being held at the Los Angeles international airport for two hours, insulted and also questioned about her visa status. Rousso did not immediately return a comment request on the Sunday. He is scheduled to fly back to France on Sunday – accompanied to the airport by the French consulate official to ensure his check-in process goes smoothly, Golsan told to the Guardian. Two more French academics are set to visit the Texas A&M for a conference this week, he said. Golsan added that there was concern in the academic community that Rousso’s predicament was a sign that the anti-immigrant “spirit of Trump” has emboldened enforcement officials to behave overzealously. The professor said that even though an immigration agent called him to confirm the details in Rousso’s story at about 4.30pm on Wednesday, he was not released for another eight hours or so and grew anxious that he might be shackled and handcuffed if forced to fly back to the France. Before Writing Reports Cops To View Body Camera Footage February 27, 2017 11:35

The law enforcement officers could view the footage on their body cameras, before writing their official report of the incident, under the legislation moving in the Florida House. The Criminal Justice Subcommittee approved the legislation in this week by a vote of eleven to one. The measure would allow the police to see and hear what is on their camera, and it would be up to the local law enforcement agencies to come up with policies and procedures about how the officer would review the footage. US Charged 10 In $10 million Steroid Ring The bill sponsor Shawn Harrison said that cops respond to a wide range of calls each day, from something as simple as a barking dog to report the shots fired. The Republican State Representative said that viewing their own body camera should help them remember what happened during a given call. Harrison said that, for the officer responding to a scene, things happen quickly. They probably do not have a full recollection of every single bit of the incident. This will allow them to review everything before they formally have to write up a report. The body camera legislation has one more committee stop in the state House, before it would be ready for a vote by the whole chamber of the house. Mrudula Duddempudi.
