Miami-Dade County woman suspected bitten by mosquito with Zika in US

A South Florida woman possibly the first person who have been bitten by a mosquito infected with the Zika virus in the continental United States.

The patient was a woman who lived in Miami-Dade County. According to a health official familiar with the case, wasn't authorized to reveal details beyond the statements of the agencies involved,  spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Florida Health department spokeswoman said that it would be premature to conclude whether or not the Zika infection was related to sex or travel.

Spokeswoman Mara Gambineri said that her statement to the Associated Press earlier on Thursday was incorrect.

She said that she was wrong and she should have written, "sexual transmission related to travel has not been ruled out."

She has informed that not all the blood and urine tests from the people around the infected patient have not yet come, and they can't say definitely that nobody involved traveled outside the United States recently.

Mosquitoes tested as part of this investigation have so far been negative for Zika, as of results that came on Thursday.

As of Thursday, there have been 288 travel related Zika cases were reported in Florida which did not involve pregnant women. 46 pregnant women have contracted the virus but none of them have contracted the virus locally.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Zika virus causes mild rash, fever and joint pain. The CDC says that Zika symptoms last between seven and 10 days.

Florida Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong urged that Floridians to drain standing water weekly. He said that just a couple of drops of water in a bottle cap can also be a breeding place for mosquitoes.

People were also advised to wear bug repellent when outdoors.
