Weather Update: Flood Alerts issued for Brevard

Brevard County residents, particular those on the beachside, should look out for severe weather until 6:30 p.m. Thursday, meteorologists said.

Thunderstorms were reported near Titusville and Cocoa, the National Weather Service in Melbourne said. Areas in the south county area, such as Malabar, Grant-Valkaria, Melbourne Shores and Floridana Beach will be impacted by the storms, which will pack lightning and possibly hail, forecasters said.

A strong thunderstorm with lightning and wind gusts up to 50 mph is being tracked over Cocoa. The storm is moving southeast at 35 mph and affected areas include Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island, Rockledge, Viera and Satellite Beach.

Heavy rainfall may lead to temporary flooding in low lying and poor drainage area.

As of 7:59 p.m., a strong thunderstorm was near Jetty Park at Port Canaveral.

A flood advisory has been issued for Brevard as a slow-moving band of rain is moving through central and south Brevard.

The advisory, which includes southern Brevard, lasts until 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

Up to 2 inches of rain had already fallen by 9:02 p.m.

Some locations that will experience flooding: Palm, Bay, Melbourne, Satellite Beach, Malabar and Indialantic. An additional two inches is expected.

A new weather advisory has been issued for Brevard County until 8:30 p.m.
