Flagler schools offer summer food sites for hungry kids

Flagler County Schools are offering food services sites this summer for kids who are struggling to have a meal. The school district seeks approval for a seventh site from Bunnell (as seventh location) to help students on free and reduced lunch. Six
locations are already set.

Sue Gibson is a lady who dealt in the past with the struggle to feed her kids. She said that it is a big deal to provide fresh food to kids.

At a certain time, she depended on summer programs to feed the children, while they were on summer break. She said “it is the same struggle for many families in her neighborhood as well.”

The school district's food services department said, about 65 % of children depend on free or reduced lunches throughout the year. The district said, “the majority of the kids don't have access to three meals a day at home and many of the students could go hungry without any help.”

Gibson said, "During the summer months they're home all day. Kids eat all day long." That is the reason for district's food service sites to come this summer.

"If there's some assistance that's going on and the children is benefiting from it, I say hats off to that," said Gibson.
